DPNG Implements new pens at the Breeding Center The measure will allow the turtles to provide conditions similar to their natural habitat. ![]() The park Rangers are moving the small turtles to their new pen. Two pens of newly implemented to the pre-adaptation, each one with a size of about 1000 square meters. In this pen the turtles have two years of age and who will spend two years at this place by strengthening their own capacities before returning their home islands. In the first pen 180 turtles were placed pre-juveniles of the species Geochelone ephippium and Geochelone hoodensis of two Islands Pinzon and Española, in the second pen there are 117 tortoises Geochelone darwini species from the Island of Santiago. Since many years, the park rangers keep special care with these turtles. Feed them twice a week, weighed, measured every three months and are concerned with cleaning the area. The infrastructure from the Breeding Center allows you to enjoy the beauty of these reptiles from a strategically placed viewpoint. Breeding Center "Fausto Llerena" currently hosts 925 young juveniles and 70 adult turtles. Here is the iconic Lonesome George is also found, He is the last tortoise of its kind.
